Apple New – Apple will account for 53% of TSMC 5nm chip production in 2021

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest subcontractor of mobile chipsets, is expected to increase its business by 12-16%.

A report considers Apple being the company’s first customer for the manufacture of 5nm chipsets. He adds that the Cupertino-based giant could account for 53% of overall 5nm chip production at TSMC.

Qualcomm is expected to account for 24% of TSMC’s 5nm chip manufacturing as Apple would use Qualcomm’s 5nm Snapdragon 5G X60 modem in upcoming iPhone 13 smartphones. It is reported that TSMC and Samsung have already reserved 90% of their 5nm chipset manufacturing capacity for the year 2021.

As for the manufacturing of the 7nm chipset, the report claims that AMD will be the main customer in this area, accounting for 27% of the total orders. It will be closely followed by NVIDIA with 21% of total production.

A few months ago it was reported that Apple had reserved TSMC’s full capacity for the production of 5nm chipsets. TSMC has started to give preferential treatment to Apple because nearly a fifth of the company’s total revenue comes from the Cupertino-based tech giant.

Preferential treatment of Apple is believed to be the reason Qualcomm awarded its Snapdragon 888 chipset manufacturing contract to Samsung. The previous generation chipset, Snapdragon 865, was produced by TSMC.

TSMC is now rushing to develop its 3nm process and it looks like Apple will be the first to contract the initial production capacity. With Apple Now manufacturing its own chips for Mac smartphones and laptops, it remains to be seen who will be the first to adopt the new 3nm chips.
