On Highcliffe Beach, it is proposed to introduce water sports concessions, while at Friars Cliff additional beach huts could be built.

A review of the future management of the recreation operation is suggested at Avon Beach to “ensure the best value for the taxpayer”. He would also like to build on the cycle path connection to Highcliffe where more water sports facilities could be introduced as well as showers and lockers.

At Mudeford Spit, the council is proposing to renovate toilets and showers and invest in the pier and passenger boats.

He also proposes to increase the ownership of beach cabins in the area, the majority of

which are owned by individuals, to “enable wider use” and increase income.

At the port of Christchurch, the council said the priority would be to protect the environment and “avoid the over-development of recreation”, while at the quay an “event site” could be created.

BCP Council manages more than 40 miles of coastline which includes maritime areas, port areas and sites of sensitive natural environments.

Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said: “The waterfront and its many locations hold a special place in the hearts of our residents, so the engagement will undoubtedly be keen.

“I will welcome everyone’s comments so that we protect the good things and plan for the future – but also be bold as to what might stimulate and energize our resort in the right way. “

People are invited to study the document and make their contribution to the future of one of the coastlines.

A council spokesperson said: “This waterfront strategy updates previous plans to define the ambitions of a world-class waterfront, fostering investment in the long term in the leisure offer on our coastline for the continued enjoyment of residents and visitors. “

The consultation runs until September 26. Visit bcpcouncil.gov.uk/SeafrontStrategy
