Residents in dozens of suburbs on Central Coast and Upper North Shore of New South Wales were placed on high alert for signs of COVID-19[female[feminine after analysis of wastewater.

NSW Health said Thursday morning that testing of sewage in the area had revealed fragments of the virus.

The wastewater treatment plant Kincumber serves the Gosford area and traces were found on December 21.

A central coast resident was diagnosed with the virus on Saturday, but NSW Health fears there may be undetected infections.

“Residents of the central coast are urged to continue to get tested if they have the milder symptoms of COVID-19, after the state’s wastewater monitoring program detected traces of the virus in a Kincumber processing plant serving the Gosford area on Monday December 21, ”he said in a statement.

The processing plant serves several vacation hot spots along the coast, including Forresters Beach and Macmasters Beach.

About 140,000 residents also live in the 36 affected suburbs.

Coronavirus fragments in the sewage do not necessarily mean that there is an active infection in the area.

In some cases, it may be that someone who had previously had the virus continues to spread it, which means that they are not contagious.

Either way, NSW Health urges avoiding complacency.

“People in these areas need to watch for any symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested immediately if even the slightest of symptoms appear,” the health agency said.
