CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the move during an online conference focused on the Metaverse, a 3D virtual world he envisions for the future.

The name change follows a string of negative stories on Facebook, based on documents leaked by a former employee.

Mark Zuckerberg Explains Reason For Facebook Name Change

The Founder said: “I have given a lot of thought to who we are as we begin this new chapter.

“Facebook is one of the most used products in the history of the world, it is an iconic brand of social media.

“But more and more it doesn’t encompass everything we do, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Quest… Building our social media apps will always be an important goal for us, but right now our brand is so closely tied to a product that it cannot represent everything we do today, let alone in the future.

He added: “To reflect who we are and what we hope to build, I am proud to report that from today our company is now Meta, our mission remains the same, it is always to bring people together… And now we have a new North. Star.

“From now on, we’re going to be Meta first and not Facebook first.”
