Book aims to shed light on Romania’s role in the Holocaust https://welcometopoole.co.uk/book-aims-to-shed-light-on-romanias-role-in-the-holocaust/ Sun, 06 Feb 2022 07:41:58 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/book-aims-to-shed-light-on-romanias-role-in-the-holocaust/

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Maksim Goldenshteyn recounts a story his grandmother once told him, how, at age 4, she snuck out of a Jewish ghetto during World War II to recover her favorite dolls that were left behind when her family was forcibly evicted from their home in occupied Soviet Ukraine.

“She knew, even at that age, that because she had lighter hair and blue eyes, she could pass as a local Ukrainian girl,” Goldenshteyn said. “She put on a headscarf and escaped from the ghetto.”

It’s one of the stories Goldenshteyn, originally from Seattle, tells in his book “So They Remember”, which chronicles – with a mixture of intimate family memoirs and historical research – the Holocaust in Transnistria, a territory of the occupied southern Ukraine which was controlled by Romania. , a close ally of Nazi Germany for most of the war.

In this territory, where around 150 camps and ghettos operated, a lesser-known but equally grim chapter of the Holocaust unfolded, where hundreds of thousands of Jews were brutalized, exploited and murdered. Many died of starvation; some succumbed to disease or exposure; some were executed.

Goldenshteyn, 33, whose family moved to the United States from the former Soviet Union in 1992, says he heard bits and pieces of his family’s past growing up, but he never linked it to any of the darkest chapters of humanity.

“They didn’t really fit the image of the Holocaust that I thought was representative,” he said. Then, 10 years ago, his mother told him the story.

“I was shocked at first,” he said.

Moved by what he had learned, Goldenshteyn embarked on a decade-long journey in search of a part of the Holocaust that he believes is largely ignored.

His starting point was to interview his grandfather, Motl Braverman, at his home in Seattle. Braverman, who died in 2015, languished as a teenager with his family in the isolated Pechera death camp.

“My grandfather spoke with a certain detachment, as if recounting someone else’s experiences,” wrote Goldenshteyn. “Later he assured me that the death camp he had survived was never far from his mind.”

All the comforts her grandmother, Anna Braverman, had known growing up “evaporated overnight”, when her family was imprisoned in a ghetto in Transnistria in 1941.

Awareness of Romania’s role in the Holocaust, at home and abroad, is far less than that of the Nazis’ role. But in the territories controlled by Romania under the military dictatorship of Ion Antonescu, between 280,000 and 380,000 Jews, plus some 12,000 Roma, were killed during the war. The decades of communism that followed all but erased memories of the Holocaust.

“I don’t think many people realize that Romania was Germany’s main ally in the East,” Goldenshteyn said, adding that the country’s communist period under dictator Nicolae Ceausescu has become “the traumatic history the most immediate” for the Romanians.

A study at the end of 2021 by the National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania showed that 40% of respondents were not interested in the Holocaust. Nearly two-thirds of the 32% who agreed that the Holocaust took place in Romania incorrectly identified the deportation of Jews to “camps controlled by Nazi Germany.”

Stefan Cristian Ionescu, a historian and Holocaust expert at Northwestern University, said most Romanians “think it’s Nazi Germany’s responsibility.”

“I think a lot of Romanians still have a hard time accepting that the Antonescu regime and the Romanian authorities…were involved in the Holocaust,” he said. “In the mass murder, deportation and dispossession of Jews in Romania and occupied territories like Transnistria.”

In an effort to raise public awareness, Romanian lawmakers last fall passed a bill to add Holocaust education to the national school curriculum, a move that has been applauded by many. But in January the far-right Alliance for Romanian Unity, which holds seats in parliament, called it a “minor issue” and an “ideological experiment”.

David Saranga, Israel’s ambassador to Romania, strongly condemned the party’s comments, saying such statements are “pure and simple proof of either a lack of responsibility or ignorance”.

Goldenshteyn believes that the Romanian authorities have made progress in recent years in recognizing the country’s role in the Holocaust. He said he was troubled by the party’s remarks but also encouraged by the reaction of the diplomatic community.

“It’s important for any country with a dark past to confront it,” said Goldenshteyn, a father of two young children. “Because it’s impossible to chart a course forward without knowing where you’ve been. There is not enough knowledge about what happened during the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.

Speaking last month at a Holocaust memorial at the Choral Temple Synagogue in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, President Klaus Iohannis said the pandemic had “amplified the virulence of anti-Semitic attacks” and warned of ” conspiracy theories and disinformation”.

“Let’s not close our eyes to these real dangers, which are often cleverly hidden behind a claimed freedom of expression,” said Iohannis.

At the Pechera camp, whose gates had a wooden sign reading “Death Camp,” hunger was such that cases of cannibalism were reported. As a teenager, Motl Braverman escaped guards and took long perilous walks in sub-zero temperatures only to return with small amounts of food to keep his family alive. He would later help others escape from the camp to relatively safer ghettos.

Goldenshteyn said what affected his grandfather the most was that “his story was never validated” due to taboos on discussing the Holocaust. “So They Remember” tells that story, and it’s as much about human bravery and kindness as it is about depraved indifference to human suffering.

“I think the strength of this book is that it combines this personal, family history…with historical research. This makes it interesting for the general public, not just for a small circle of scholars,” Ionescu said. “Much remains to be discovered about Romania’s involvement in the Holocaust – especially this territory of Transnistria.”

Goldenshteyn says that for years after his grandfather’s death, he avoided listening to audio recordings of their interviews. Then, in 2017, when he finally pressed play, he was struck by the words of his late grandfather.

“You should write this down so no one forgets,” his grandfather said. “So they remember.”

———

This story corrects that Goldenshteyn’s grandmother is still alive.

‘Nothing to do, nowhere to go’: what happens when elephants live alone https://welcometopoole.co.uk/nothing-to-do-nowhere-to-go-what-happens-when-elephants-live-alone/ Tue, 01 Feb 2022 13:22:00 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/nothing-to-do-nowhere-to-go-what-happens-when-elephants-live-alone/

Few laws or regulations prevent elephants from isolating themselves. The AZA requires that zoos with female elephants must “have a minimum of three females (or space to have three females)” – meaning a zoo can retain its accredited status even if it has an elephant , as long as the installation has room for three elephants. Ideally, the elephants would be herded together, said AZA President Dan Ashe. National geographic last year, but added: “Sometimes animals don’t want to be in groups.” The Animal Welfare Act, which is enforced by the United States Department of Agriculture, contains several regulations dealing with the social needs of animals, including primates, dogs, and marine mammals, but none for elephants.

The number of captive elephants has declined in the United States, and as more elephants in zoos die than are born, the number of lone elephants will increase. More than 30 North American zoos have have phased out their elephant exhibits since the 1990s for various reasons, including the cost and difficulty of caring for elephants.

“You’re going to have facilities that only have one elephant,” says Delcianna Winders, director of the animal rights program at Vermont Law School. Will they decide to send them to sanctuaries where they will be with other elephants? “Or will they claim they’re too old to move out and keep them alone?”

The AZA, which oversees conservation breeding programs for African and Asian elephants, agrees that zoo populations cannot be sustained without an influx of new animals from wild populations – a controversial position in itself because it often involves the break-up of elephant families.

An elephant never forgets

In the wild, much of elephants’ brain stimulation comes from other elephants, says elephant behavior scientist Joyce Poole and National Geographic Explorer. They are always on the move – listening, sniffing, playing – whereas solitary captive elephants are “not very lively” – they have no other elephants to interact with and nowhere to explore, she says. (Learn more about the African elephant ethogram from Poole, the most complete audio-visual library ever made on the behavior of African savannah elephants.)

Male elephants spend 10 to 14 years with their mother before leaving to form their own spouse.singles groups.” Women remain with their mothers throughout their lives, in multigenerational social groups for up to 50 years.

“Growing up in a social setting or with a family is essential to their development,” says Poole, and social interactions remain central to their well-being throughout their lives.

This may be related to certain brain characteristics of elephants. Their cells, or neurons, have a particular long branched dendrites, which may suggest that elephants process information more thoroughly and contemplatively than other mammals. They have as many neurons in their cerebral cortex like humans, and they have relatively larger pyramidal neurons, a type of cortical neuron central to cognitive processes, according to elephant cognition scientist Lucy Bates. (To learn more about how elephants communicate, check out our elephant call guide.)

Although not known for certain, these characteristics may also help explain why elephants have strong memories, especially in a social context. Some evidence suggests that after 27 years of separation, captive elephants can still recognize the smell of their mother’s urine. In the wild, elephants can distinguish between calls from family members and strangers; they can recognize the voices of at least a hundred other elephants; and they can save the locations of no less than 17 different family members. In contrast, humans are thought to be able to retain about seven items in their short-term memory at a time.

The fact that “elephant brains are so adapted to this kind of social processing [of] the information just demonstrates how important family and social interaction is to them,” says Bates.

Changes in the brain

At the Natural Bridge Zoo, Asha spends hours walking around her garden, grazing quietly.

Veterinarian Philip Ensley, who has worked with elephants at the San Diego Zoo for nearly 30 years, visited the zoo in September to observe him and assess his health for the nonprofit Free all captive elephants, one of several animal rights groups that have criticized Asha’s conditions. In a private report shared with National Geographic, he noted that Asha rocked back and forth, shifted her weight from certain limbs (potentially indicating arthritis or joint disease, which are common in captive elephants), and seemed “unstimulated” and “detached” .

“It is inappropriate in the care and management of elephants in captivity to keep a single female,” he concluded in the report. The lack of a mate “makes Asha suffer”.

The stress of captivity can change the brain, says Jacobs. In wild animals in captivity, one effect can be stereotypies – repetitive and seemingly unnecessary behaviors, like a monkey pulling its hair out. They are most often displayed by bored social animals in captivity and are rarely seen in the wild. For a solitary captive elephant, the loss of control of its environment and lack of stimulation caused by long-term isolation can trigger pacing, head bobbing, swaying or swaying, among other repetitive behaviors.

In one report 2017 on lone captive elephants in 14 accredited zoos in Japan, almost all were noted to display stereotypical behaviors.

“If there’s a behavioral issue or a psychological issue, there’s an underlying neural issue,” says Jacobs. Repetitive behaviors, according to studies in humans and other animalshave been linked to disruption of the basal ganglia, a part of the brain that helps control voluntary movement.

In elephants that sway or pace, their basal ganglia are likely so disrupted that they can’t stop these repetitive actions, Jacobs says. (This is also true for humans who suffer from basal ganglia damage, such as Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, he says, which can cause involuntary movements and debilitating tremors.)

For wild animals in captivity, this type of brain damage would be associated with a lack of stimulation. “The brain feeds on stimulation,” says Jacobs. Without it, the dendrites shrink from lack of use and the capillaries shrink in diameter, reducing blood flow to the brain. A study 2018 on the effects of prolonged isolation on the brains of mice found a 20% reduction in their neurons. “‘Use it or lose it’ – this applies to the muscles, but it also applies to the brain,” he says.

Stress, whether caused by isolation or something else, also activates the body’s fight-or-flight stress response, which releases cortisol into the bloodstream, giving the body a boost of energy to respond to the perceived threat. When the fight-or-flight response is continuously stimulated, it ends up damaging nerve cells in the hippocampus, which is central to learning and memory. In humans, a compromised hippocampus is often associated with depression, bipolar disorder and other stress-related illnesses.

‘Why is it even still allowed?’

An elephant alone in captivity has “nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to see, no one to communicate with,” Poole says.

“Why is it still allowed for these animals that we know so well? Why don’t our laws do anything about this? said Delcianna Winders of Vermont Law School.

Home Secretary Approves Autonomy Founder’s Extradition to US https://welcometopoole.co.uk/home-secretary-approves-autonomy-founders-extradition-to-us/ Fri, 28 Jan 2022 23:01:28 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/home-secretary-approves-autonomy-founders-extradition-to-us/ Home Secretary Priti Patel has approved the extradition of a British tech tycoon to the United States to face criminal fraud charges.

It comes after Dr. Mike Lynch lost a multibillion-dollar fraud suit on Friday over the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

He is accused of deliberately overestimating the value of his company before it was taken over by the American technology giant.

HP, now Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), has sued Dr Lynch and former Autonomy chief financial officer Sushovan Hussain for around five billion US dollars (£3.7 billion), over his purchase of the Cambridge-based company for US$11.1bn (£8.3bn) more than a decade ago.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has been asked to make a decision on Dr Lynch’s extradition to the US by the end of Friday (Victoria Jones/PA)

Announcing his decision on the case at the High Court in London on Friday, Judge Hildyard said HP had been “substantially successful” in its various claims against the two men – but was likely to receive “substantially less” than the amount claimed in damages.

Dr Lynch has denied all charges against him and signaled that he intends to appeal against the High Court judge’s decision.

This decision coincided with a deadline for the Home Secretary to decide whether Dr Lynch should be extradited to the United States.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘Under the Extradition Act 2003 the Secretary of State must sign an extradition order if there are no grounds for barring the prescription. Extradition requests are only sent to the Home Secretary once a judge decides he can proceed after considering various aspects of the case.

“On January 28, after review by the courts, the extradition of Dr. Michael Lynch to the United States was ordered.”

On Wednesday, Ms Patel was given until midnight Friday to decide on her extradition after a High Court judge ruled against Dr Lynch’s legal challenge within a previously set deadline.

Ms Patel had wanted to consider Judge Hildyard’s decision on the High Court civil complaint before making an extradition decision.

US authorities say Dr Lynch deliberately overstated the value of his company, which specializes in software to sort through large data sets.

Mike Lynch
Dr Lynch has accused HP of trying to ‘scapegoat’ him for his ‘failures’ (PA)

Chris Morvillo, of Clifford Chance law firm – representing Dr Lynch, said in a statement after the Home Office announcement: “Dr Lynch strongly denies the charges against him in the United States and will continue to fight to establish his innocence.

“He is a British citizen who ran a British business in Britain subject to British laws and rules and that is where the matter should be resolved.

“It’s not the end of the battle, far from it.

“Dr Lynch will now appeal to the High Court in London.”

Earlier, Kelwin Nicholls, another Clifford Chance lawyer representing the contractor, said after the High Court judge’s decision: ‘Today’s result is disappointing and Dr Lynch intends to appeal .

“We will study the full judgment over the next few weeks. We note the judge’s concerns about the reliability of some of HP’s witnesses.

“We also note that the judge expects any loss suffered by HP to be significantly less than the five billion dollars (£3.8 billion) claimed.”

Judge Hildyard presented a summary of his findings in the case on Friday, more than two years after the start of what was believed to be the UK’s biggest civil fraud trial – which lasted nine months in 2019 .

He said Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain had given a “misleading image” of the company, including by “reselling” hardware to allow Autonomy to cover software shortfalls.

Judge said: “The purpose of the hardware sales strategy was to meet market expectations for revenue maintenance and growth, misleading the market as to Autonomy’s true position in the market.

“These loss-making transactions had no commercial justification.

“The justifications put forward by the defendants were only pretexts to increase the revenue declared in the accounts.

“The strategy was not intended to increase software sales. This rationale was a pretense, designed primarily for the audit committee and Deloitte, who would not have approved the accounting treatment without the pretense.

“The concealment of hardware sales and their true cost in Autonomy’s accounts and other published information was necessary because the exposure of Autonomy’s use of hardware sales and gross margin erosion would have negated their true goal.

“It would have revealed that Autonomy’s software business was not generating the revenue and profit acceleration that the market believed it was, and which strongly influenced its price.”

Judge said Autonomy was founded in 1996 by a company called Cambridge Neurodynamics, an early venture in using “machine learning” to develop software techniques that Dr Lynch explored in his doctoral dissertation at the University of Cambridge.

His full judgment in the case is expected to be released at a later date but remains under embargo until then.

During the civil lawsuit in 2019, HP said the writedown in Autonomy’s value was due to it discovering “serious accounting irregularities”.

Laurence Rabinowitz QC, representing HP, said Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain had knowingly caused Autonomy to “engage in a program of widespread and systematic fraudulent accounting practices” prior to the sale.

He said Autonomy had “achieved its revenue and revenue growth goals by simply buying and selling third-party hardware, without any connection to Autonomy software.”

Mr Rabinowitz added that the company had also used “a variety of other fraudulent devices” to accelerate revenue or to invent revenue that never existed in the first place.

Both men have denied the allegations and Dr Lynch has launched a counterclaim for at least US$125m (£95m) in damages against HP for “a series of false, misleading and unfair public statements regarding his alleged liability for the supposed accounting. irregularities and misrepresentations to Autonomy.

He accused HP of “making a series of outlandish allegations of fraud and scapegoating”, saying it had “destroyed one of the most successful and promising software companies of its time due to the incompetence of management, politics and infighting”.

Dr Lynch, from Suffolk, claimed the tech giant was trying to make him “a scapegoat for their failures”.

Mr. Hussain was convicted in April 2018 in the United States of wire fraud and other crimes related to the sale of Autonomy and was sentenced to five years in prison.

In separate criminal proceedings in the United States, Dr. Lynch faces charges of securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy in federal court relating to the sale of Autonomy.

This news comes at a time when, according to a recent report, governments are struggling to tackle financial crime.

As PYMNTS reported on Monday January 24, a report by an anti-corruption charity known as Spotlight on Corruption indicates that economic crime in the UK ends up costing the government “hundreds of times more” than ‘it doesn’t spend to fight the criminals themselves.

According to the report, the UK government spends £825 million ($1.1 billion) each year on the budgets of national agencies that tackle economic crime. But that pales in comparison to the £190 billion (or $258 billion) lost to fraud and the £100 billion ($135.6 billion) spent fighting money laundering.

The development is a far cry from January 5, 2021, when Guaranteed Rate announced the acquisition of Stearns with palpable excitement about the future. “The pending acquisition comes at a time of strong momentum for Guaranteed Rate, which recorded its best year of production in 2020,” the company said in a prepared statement. “This move builds on Guaranteed Rate’s track record of completing and integrating successful acquisitions and connects directly to its goal of becoming the county’s premier lender.”

At the time, Guaranteed Rate touted Stearns’ “strong presence” as complementary to its growth plans: “Guaranteed Rate’s experience and expertise in managing joint ventures and partnership platforms is further enhanced by the strong presence of Stearns Holdings in these channels,” the company writes. “Stearns Holdings has an extensive partnership model that includes realtor, builder and relocation joint ventures, private label relationships and preferred partnerships with independent mortgage banks. These partnerships include well-known brands SoFi and Home Mortgage Alliance. Combining these entities with Guaranteed Rate’s existing joint ventures with Realogy and @properties will create one of the largest platforms in the country. The acquisition also allows Guaranteed Rate to enter the wholesale channel to complement the company’s multi-channel distribution vision. »

At the time, Ciardelli had high hopes for the Stearns partnership: “We are delighted to bring Stearns Holdings into the Guaranteed Rates family,” he wrote announcing the purchase. “Combining the incredible talent of the Stearns organization with that of our existing team exemplifies the best of the best in the mortgage industry, resulting in an even more powerful platform.

The guaranteed rate companies — which include Guaranteed Rate Inc., Guaranteed Rate Affinity, LLC and Proper Rate, LLC — have more than 9,000 employees in more than 750 offices across the United States, according to company documentation. The Chicago-based company describes itself as “…one of the largest retail mortgage lenders in the United States, financing more than $73 billion in 2020.”

Guaranteed Rate was founded in 2000 and is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The company was named Top Lender for Online Service in 2018 by US News & World Report and Top Mortgage Lender for Online Lending, as well as Best Mortgage Lender for Refinancing by NerdWallet in 2021.

Russian minister accepts invitation to meet Defense Secretary Ben Wallace https://welcometopoole.co.uk/russian-minister-accepts-invitation-to-meet-defense-secretary-ben-wallace/ Sat, 22 Jan 2022 07:19:51 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/russian-minister-accepts-invitation-to-meet-defense-secretary-ben-wallace/ The Russian Defense Minister has accepted an invitation to meet British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace amid tensions over Ukraine, according to the PA news agency.

Mr Wallace invited his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, to visit London to discuss mutual security earlier this week.

Shoigu instead offered to meet in Moscow, given that the latest bilateral defense talks between the countries were held in London.

A senior defense source said: “The Secretary of Defense is pleased that Russia has accepted the invitation to speak with his counterpart.

“As the last defense bilateral between our two countries took place in London in 2013, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu offered to meet in Moscow instead.

“The Secretary of State has been clear that he will explore all avenues to achieve stability and a resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. We are in communication with the Russian government.

It comes after Downing Street warned that Russia would be “punished” if the country pursued “destabilizing action” in Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Russian diplomats in Switzerland on Friday in a bid to avert a conflict on the Ukrainian border, where Moscow has amassed around 100,000 troops.

Number 10 said if Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an offensive there would be a “radical package” launched by the UK and its allies against the Kremlin.

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned Mr Putin that he had to ‘stand back and step back’ from the war in Ukraine or risk being drawn into a protracted conflict like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Speaking at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, she said: “If there is a Russian incursion into Ukraine, it would have a huge cost.

“We are ready to put in place very tough sanctions, we are also working to support Ukraine in terms of defensive capability.”

A spokesman for Boris Johnson said: “I think the Prime Minister has been clear that any destabilizing action by Russia in Ukraine would be a strategic mistake and would have significant consequences.

“I spoke about the fact that we are working closely with our partners, including the United States, to develop a set of radical measures to ensure that the Russian government is punished if it crosses the line.”

Patrick Bamford’s return to Leeds delayed by foot injury https://welcometopoole.co.uk/patrick-bamfords-return-to-leeds-delayed-by-foot-injury/ Thu, 20 Jan 2022 15:00:46 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/patrick-bamfords-return-to-leeds-delayed-by-foot-injury/ Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has revealed striker Patrick Bamford has suffered yet another setback in his bid to regain full fitness.

Bamford, one of at least eight injured first-team players set to miss Saturday’s Premier League home game against Newcastle, suffered a foot problem.

Bielsa said: “(Adam) Forshaw and (Junior) Firpo have muscle injuries and Bamford has a new injury.

“He overcame his muscle issues, but now he has a problem on the bottom of his foot.”

Bamford has made just six Premier League appearances this season due to successive injuries and last appeared for Bielsa’s side in early December.

Bamford came off the bench after recovering from an ankle injury to score an equalizer in stoppage time in a 2-2 home draw against Brentford, only to injure his hip in the celebration of his goal.

Defender Diego Llorente is available for Saturday’s visit to relegation rivals Newcastle and Bielsa has confirmed positive news regarding two other players who recently missed the game through injury.

When asked who else would return to contention, Bielsa replied: “Llorente and probably Tyler Roberts and (Joe) Gelhardt. We maintain the presence of Rodrigo, who played 30 minutes last week.

Roberts was suspended for last week’s 3-2 win at West Ham but would have missed out anyway with a calf problem, while Gelhardt (ankle) was ruled out for three matches.

Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper (hamstring), Jamie Shackleton (Achilles) Charlie Cresswell (shoulder) and Sam Greenwood (knee) all remain unavailable.

Forshaw and Firpo (both with hamstrings) were taken off in the space of a minute at West Ham.

Leeds fans have urged the club to bolster their depleted squad during the transfer window and this week they have reportedly made an improved offer for RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

An initial bid of £15million for the United States international was reportedly rejected and Bielsa refused to be fired on speculation.

“I prefer to talk about a player when it’s not a hypothetical possibility and when it’s our player,” he added.

Jack Harrison’s first top hat-trick at the London Stadium took Leeds to back-to-back league victories for the first time this season and lifted them nine points clear of the relegation zone.

A third straight league win on Saturday against Newcastle would open a 13-point gap between them and Eddie Howe’s second team.

Bielsa added: “The next game is always the next thing on our mind, but it’s true that a win like that always improves the mood.

“Preparing for a game with the tranquility of victory is better than doing it without, but the most important thing is always the next game.”

Business Loan Qualifications: How to Qualify for Financing https://welcometopoole.co.uk/business-loan-qualifications-how-to-qualify-for-financing/ Thu, 13 Jan 2022 20:27:44 +0000 https://welcometopoole.co.uk/business-loan-qualifications-how-to-qualify-for-financing/

Getting a small business loan can be overwhelming and sometimes frustrating. Understand what is required to qualify for a business loan to facilitate the process of applying for and obtaining business financing.

Most small business financing is based on three main criteria: income, credit, and time in business. Depending on the lender and type of financing, however, there may be additional qualifications including industry, collateral, business plan, financials and more.

Small Business Loan Requirements

Three main factors are almost always considered in one way or another by small business lenders:

1. Income

Here, lenders want to understand if the business has sufficient cash to repay the loan or financing. Some lenders have minimum annual income requirements (eg $120,000) while others may require average monthly income for the past 3-6 months (eg $10,000 per month on average).

To verify income, lenders will often want to see business bank statements. Be prepared to provide copies or link your bank account during the application process so the lender can access this information directly from your bank.

Some lenders, especially traditional lenders like banks, will also require business tax returns and may even require personal tax returns. When tax returns are required, most lenders want to see copies for the last 2-3 years.

Financial statements may also be required. Banks, including those that provide SBA loans backed by the U.S. Small Business Administration, may require up-to-date financial statements, such as a balance sheet, income statement, or profit and loss statement since inception of the year. Financial projections may also be required.

If your business invoices other businesses, you may be eligible for invoice financing. In this case, you may need to provide an Aged Accounts Receivable Report or an Accounts Receivable Report. Your accounting professional can help you run this report if needed.

2. Credit

Here, lenders want to understand how the applicant has handled debt in the past. Some lenders check personal credit reports or credit scores, some lenders check business credit reports, and some may check both. (Some lenders don’t check credit at all, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.)

Personal credit

Not all small business financing options require good credit, but many check personal credit scores with one of the three major credit bureaus. Traditional lenders such as banks often require a minimum FICO score of 680 to 700. Online lenders may have more lenient requirements and may offer financing to those with credit scores between 600 and 600. Certain types of financing are available for those with bad credit (usually below 620-650).

The initial credit check is often a soft credit check, which does not affect personal credit scores. However, if you decide to complete the full loan application, there may be a rigorous credit check which may result in a drop of around 3-7 points.

Business credit

Some lenders will check the company’s credit. They may review credit reports from commercial credit bureaus such as Dun & Bradstreet, Equifax or Experian. Often they look for red flags such as excessive UCC deposits, collection accounts, or judgments. Other times they will check the companies’ credit ratings.

3. Time spent in business

When you complete a small business loan application, you will be asked when the business opened. This is because most lenders have a minimum time in trading requirement. Some require a minimum of two years in business, while others will provide funding for start-ups, or even start-ups.

If you have a new business, your options will be more limited and you may need to provide other information to convince the lender that you will be able to repay the loan, provided they are considering funding a startup. This can include a business plan or documentation (like resumes) confirming successful experience starting other businesses, or a track record in your industry.

If your business is incorporated (LLC, S Corp or C Corp), you can use the date of incorporation as the start date. Otherwise, you may need to use the date you obtained your business license or obtained your Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Industry

The type of company you work for is also important. Businesses are classified using NAICS or SIC codes. These are government codes that indicate the industry in which the company operates. Some types of businesses are difficult to finance, period. Cannabis or gambling companies are two examples.

Others may be considered risky by some lenders but perfectly acceptable to others. Real estate, restaurants or retail businesses are examples. Some lenders will provide financing to borrowers with these types of businesses, while others will not.

Collateral

Collateral is something tangible pledged to secure the loan. It can be heavy equipment, real estate, personal home equity, inventory, or even future receivables. Not all business loans require collateral. In the case of SBA loans, the SBA will require collateral to be pledged if available, but lenders cannot reject loan applications simply because the business owner does not have collateral.

Equipment financing by nature involves collateral: you pledge the equipment you are financing. Since the financing is secured by collateral, the interest rates are often lower than for an unsecured loan without collateral.

Amount of the loan

The amount of funding you seek will also determine what you need to qualify. A $1 million term loan will require a lot more documentation than a $10,000 microloan, for example. The larger the loan, the more control there will be.

Funding Checklist

To prepare for funding, it may be helpful to gather the following information. Not everything will be necessary, but having this information at your fingertips can make the application easier and faster.

Personal informations:

  • Valid driver’s license or passport as proof of identity
  • Personal tax returns

Business information:

  • Tax returns for the last two years (if available)
  • Last six months of company bank statements
  • Commercial license (if required)
  • Articles of incorporation
  • Address Verification
  • Void check (for ACH or direct deposit)
  • Franchise Agreement/UFOC (if applicable)
  • Commercial lease (if your business leases property)
  • Business plan (for bank loan or SBA loan)
