Tourists invited to use app showing crowds levels at Sussex beaches

SUNSEEKERS are encouraged to download an app before heading to the beach to prevent beauty spots from becoming overcrowded.

The free Beach Check UK app shows beach goers which areas are most crowded in real time to help them meet social distancing guidelines.

The National Academy of Coastal Tourism encourages families visiting Sussex during summer vacation to use the app.

It is available for Apple or Android devices and provides traffic light warning for high traffic areas.

Developed by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Tourism, the app has recently been extended to include information on Camber Sands, Bexhill Beach, Worthing Beach and West Wittering.

After its successful first phase, the app was funded by the government’s local digital collaboration unit at the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government to deploy it.

Local Government Minister Luke Hall said: “We want everyone to safely enjoy a well-deserved summer this year, while continuing to minimize the spread of the coronavirus.

“That’s why the government is funding Europe’s first innovative beach check app to allow people to check if beaches are busy before traveling to avoid a surge of visitors.

“This will allow coastal communities to welcome visitors with care and help local areas recover from the challenges faced by the pandemic. ”
