Police responded to a report of an object found in the water by a member of the public on a boat at Weymouth Marina at noon today (Tuesday 12 October).

Nearby streets Westwey Road and Rodwell Road were closed by police as they put up a 100-meter cordon around the boat.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit attended the scene to remove the item.

The “unknown object” was taken to Weymouth Beach where the area was cleared by police to allow a controlled explosion around 4.30pm.

The video, which can be seen above, shows an empty beach as military personnel prepare to carry out the controlled blast.

With a crowd watching, the denotation threw sand into the air as the loud sound of the explosion echoed through the area.

Christine Brown, who filmed the explosion, said she was walking back to her car at the Pavilion parking lot when she saw the demining crew on the beach.

She said: “At around 4 pm, we were returning to the parking lot when the demining team arrived and began to search an area near the sea line.

“The police arrived and quickly evacuated the area to safety.

“The bomb disposal team were able to complete a controlled explosion of an object in 30 minutes.”

The Stratford-upon-Avon tourist added that it was “annoying” to wait for the detonation and recalled how “the sand fell on us” in the parking lot.

She said: “I thought the incident had been dealt with very quickly and efficiently. It was both exciting and scary to wait for the moment of the detonation.

“The explosion was much stronger than expected and we liked the sand all the way to the Pavilion parking lot.”
