Manchester United star Ethan Laird suffers another injury awaiting his Bournemouth debut

Manchester United right-back Ethan Laird’s hopes of making his debut for loan club Bournemouth against Boreham Wood in the FA Cup on Sunday night have been dashed by yet another injury setback.

The 20-year-old, who is held in very high regard by the locals at Old Trafford, joined Bournemouth on loan for the rest of the season last month after a successful spell at Swansea in the first half of the campaign .

Laird racked up 21 appearances in all competitions for Swans, claiming four assists, and United felt a temporary move to promotion from Bournemouth would further enhance his development and provide him with the opportunity to add promotion to his CV.

However, the versatile right-sided player is still waiting to make his Cherries debut due to a hamstring issue.

Cherries boss Scott Parker confirmed last week that Laird is on the road to recovery and could be in contention to face Boreham Wood – although next weekend’s Championship clash with Birmingham City was a bigger focus realistic.

At the time, the Bournemouth boss said: “Ethan Laird is going in the right direction.

“The weekend is too fast for him. Hopefully we’ll see him in the FA Cup or he’ll be available for Birmingham (February 9).”

However, Laird’s hopes of bowing out at Bournemouth against the non-Championship side have now been dashed, with Parker confirming he has suffered a setback in his recovery programme.

“He had a little setback,” Parker told the Daily Echo. “I hope it’s not too long.

“Look, it hasn’t been ideal, let’s make it right. It hasn’t been ideal. He came in and obviously had a little problem with his hamstrings.

“Hopefully we’re not too far off, but we’re just being a bit careful about that.”
