Bournemouth University of the Arts student wins BBC Three Glow Up

The trio presented their final work to industry professionals with the aim of becoming the next UK makeup star and gaining plenty of opportunities to work with key industry contacts.

The result of the show sparked celebrations among AUB staff and students.

Sophie, 21, who came to study BA (Hons) Makeup for Media and Performance at AUB after taking a course at the Foundation for the Arts in Suffolk, has worked in various disciplines at the university including prosthesis, studio work and theatrical performance.

Sophie’s successes on the show included working to demonstrate her skills in the use of color; creating a facial depiction of artist Francis Bacon’s work, earning him a coveted “ding-dong” seal of approval from Judge Glow Up and Val Garland, global makeup director for L’Oréal Paris.

Speaking about Sophie’s time at AUB, Sara Taylor, BA (Hons) Makeup for Media and Performance Course Manager, said, “I am absolutely delighted for Sophie. The program showcased Sophie’s talent, abilities and specialist knowledge as a professional makeup artist.

“During her university studies, over the past three years, Sophie has worked very hard to ensure that her transformative work is sophisticated, creative, transparent, intelligent and contextually accurate.

She added, “The quality and caliber of its practical applications underscores the importance and importance of studying the full-time BA (hons) Make-up for Media and Performance degree. I look forward to following the development of his career with great interest! ”

Diagnosed with autism at 17, Sophie used the show to engage and talk to other people living with conditions that affect social interactions like autism.

Sophie said: “Being a young woman with autism is difficult because there are a lot of misconceptions and misconceptions about how I’m supposed to behave and how I’m meant to be.

“I wanted to go to Glow Up to show that there are people out there who are in the creative industries who can thrive when they feel comfortable!”

The makeup artist, who is still deciding what to do after her victory, took on the challenge of completing her final year at AUB while working on the show, using days between shoots to write each brief. creative and examine its strengths and weaknesses. job.

Sophie even missed the Christmas celebrations because she was too busy prepping her wig design skills for the show to take any time.

The show’s ten contestants, which included six makeup artists, a caregiver, journalist, photographer and beauty guru, fought for eight rounds to fight for the title, working in areas of makeup design. such as glamor, retail, film and television and experimental.

She added: “When I applied for the show, and the AUB speakers kind of gave the green light, I definitely got the satisfaction of believing I could do it and it was in. my head all the time Without Wayne, Caroline and the whole makeup team, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do it.

“The competition was so open, and I knew that from the moment we had to take off makeup for the before and after shots in the first episode, we had to give it our all. I was very intimidated when I got to the shoot because that I was the least experienced.

“But as soon as I got to prosthetics week, I realized that a lot of people watching probably didn’t know as much about what was going on, and it was really fun! This is when we can show the public why people come to college to study makeup.

“I like pushing this so much, because there is a level that makeup artists can really aspire to!”
