CASES of the Covid Delta variant in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area increased by more than a third in a week.

Figures from Public Health England show a total of 710 cases were recorded in the BCP Council area in the week to June 30.

The previous week, 508 cases had been recorded in the city.

It is the second highest in the southwest after Bristol which has more than 1,000 cases.

Meanwhile, the greater Dorset region has recorded 301 cases, up from 224 previously.

Public Health England said its latest weekly data showed the number of Delta variant cases in the UK increased by 50,824 since last week to a total of 161,981.

A spokesperson said: “This represents a 46% increase. Of these, 42 are from the Delta AY.1 subline. The Delta variant currently accounts for around 95% of sequenced cases across the UK. ”

Dr Jenny Harries, Managing Director of the UK Health Security Agency, said: “Cases across the UK continue to increase and it is extremely important that we remember to be careful. The best thing we can do to protect ourselves and the people we love is to get vaccinated if they are eligible, get tested twice a week, and practice ‘hands, face, space, l ‘fresh air’ at all times.

“Although the cases are increasing, we are not seeing a proportional increase in the number of people admitted to hospital. The data suggests that this is a testament to the success of the vaccination program so far and clearly demonstrates the importance of getting both doses of the vaccine. Show up as soon as you are eligible. It will help us to break the chain of transmission and it will save lives. ”
