Changes to tip opening hours in the Dorset Council area

OPEN hours for all tips in the Dorset Council area are changing, with an extra hour in winter and an hour less in summer.

From October 1 to March 30, household recycling centers (CRH), or tips, will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., one hour earlier than they normally open.

From April 1 to September 30, tips will still open at 9 a.m. but close at 5 p.m., having always remained open until 6 p.m. during the summer months.

Dorset Council says it has analyzed traffic data which shows there is significantly more demand for tips between 9am and 10am than between 5pm and 6pm.

Advisors say opening earlier will be particularly helpful in March, as the councils have seen a high number of visitors drop off yard waste due to the early onset of the warmer spring this year. Services reportedly struggled to cope as tips didn’t open until 10am, but visitors started arriving much earlier.

It is hoped that the earlier opening hours in winter will help smooth demand throughout the day.

Councilor Jill Haynes, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for customer and community services, said: “It is important that, where possible, we tailor our services to the needs and behaviors of the public we serve.

“In this case, we have looked at the data and it is clear that people much prefer to drop their waste into an HRC at 9 a.m. in winter rather than between 5 and 6 p.m. in summer, so we are changing the opening hours accordingly. .

“This change makes our messaging easier; all HRCs in Dorset are open from 9am every day all year round except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years.

“It will also solve the historic problems we encountered in March – and during the winter months in general – when some visitors want to drop off their trash in the morning before continuing with their day.

“I would like to thank our waste management contracting team for their hard work in researching and designing these changes, to our subcontractors W&S Recycling for the excellent job they do in managing our 10 HRC, and to all who use them to ensure their waste is disposed of. correctly.”
